Frequently Asked Questions
How do I generate ASCII art from text?
Select the "Text" tab at the top of the sidebar, type or paste your text into the Input field, and the ASCII art will appear in the preview area instantly. Adjust the width slider and style preset to fine-tune the result.
How do I convert an image to ASCII?
Switch to the "Image" tab, drag and drop your image into the input area (or click to browse). Glyphi will convert it to ASCII art using the selected symbol set. PNG, JPG, and HEIC formats are supported.
What's the difference between style presets?
Each preset combines a symbol set with foreground and background colors:
- Terminal — classic green-on-black
- Amber — vintage amber CRT look
- Matrix — green code rain aesthetic
- Neon — bright pink on dark
- Paper — black text on light background
- Mono — clean black-and-white
- Dark — soft gray on near-black
- Random (Pro) — generates a unique color combination on every click
How do I export my ASCII art?
Click the "Export" button in the bottom-right corner. You can save as PNG (rendered image) or TXT (plain ASCII characters). You can also "Copy" the text directly or "Copy as code" with proper escaping for use in source files.
Why does the art look different at different widths?
ASCII art is rendered by mapping pixels or strokes to characters in a grid. A wider grid uses more characters per row, which produces more detail. Narrower widths produce more compact, stylized results.
Can I use Glyphi's output in commercial projects?
Yes. Any ASCII art you generate with Glyphi is yours to use however you like — in code, on social media, in commercial products, or in published works.
What are animations and how do they work?
Animations (Pro feature) make your ASCII art come alive in the preview:
- Typewriter — characters appear one by one
- Wave — a ripple sweeps across the art
- Blink — random characters flicker
- Slide-in — art slides in from one side
- Glitch — random characters momentarily corrupt
- Matrix Rain — cascading columns gradually reveal the art
Animations are visible in the preview and exported as frames if you save to GIF (coming soon).
Privacy
Does Glyphi collect my data?
No. Glyphi runs completely offline and does not send any data to the internet. No analytics, no telemetry, no servers.
Where are my settings stored?
Locally on your device. Nothing is sent to the cloud. Your settings remain even after uninstalling and reinstalling, as long as macOS preserves the app data.
What happens to images I import?
Images you drop into Glyphi are processed locally on your Mac to generate ASCII art. They are never uploaded, never stored beyond your current session, and are discarded as soon as you load a new image or close the app.
